MPCCL August 13, 2020 Meeting

Speak Up! Local time sensitive action for input into city’s master plan on climate and community issues: Beginning Monday, August 17th through Monday, August 31st, an interactive web platform will be available at enabling the public to review and provide feedback on elements of the proposed plan, including Sustainable Land Use, Connected Mobility Systems, Focused Redevelopment, Exceptional Parks and Public Spaces, and Innovative Services and Aspirations.

On Thursday, August 20th, the City and project consultant McKenna Associates, will host a virtual open house at 7 p.m. This event will offer the public an opportunity to learn more about the plan, provide feedback, and ask questions.

  1. National Video Speaker—Dr. Kim Cobb, professor at the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Georgia Tech

A leading expert in the study of corals and how climate change is affecting them, Dr. Cobb was devastated when, during a 2016 research trip to the South Pacific, she saw that most of the coral reef she had been studying was obliterated. “For me, it was a bellwether event… I decided to go ‘all in’ on climate solutions, personally and professionally.” Excellent report on her research, lifestyle changes, and multiple collaborations in Georgia.

    1. Central Michigan Climate Solutions Summit –our conference is rescheduled as a virtual conference Friday, Oct. 16, 2020, 9:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
  2. 2 panels, one university, one community
  3. Keynote speaker: Dr. Andy Hoffman, professor of Sustainable Enterprise in two schools at U of M, Business and Environment & Sustainability
  4. Short video clips of organizations and businesses in lieu of tabling to share what they are doing. 
  5. Taping the entire Summit
  6. Volunteers needed for promotion and event monitoring

  • Other Actions you can take to make democracy work for the climate.
    • National CCL Action– Join with others to get out the vote:
      • League of Women Voters of Mt.P.A. (hand outs at the Strickler Center and Soup Kitchen) for general assistance & reminders
      • Rock the Vote and census door hangers for students and young people
    • First week in December CCL Lobby Day:
  • Introduce HR 763 to new legislative members of Congress
  • Have the 81 legislators renew their sponsorship in the next Congress
  • Get new sponsors
  • Get more endorsements from our district
  • Make sure that CCL is at the table and a price on carbon remains the core of the bill (As is, it will raise $3 trillion over 10 years which will be distributed equally to households; it is an economic stimulus, but not from the government.)
